Rabat- A new survey has found that there is an increasing distrust in public institutions in Morocco. It has also revealed that a whopping 70 per cent of Moroccans said they had been forced to pay bribes.

The Party of Justice and Development (PJD) conducted the survey in the various districts of the city of Fez over the course of six months. The size of the sample surveyed for the study and the criteria it built upon to reach the findings have not been disclosed.

The survey has found that 40 per cent of respondents believe that paying a bribe is a necessity to benefit from public services.

60 per cent of Moroccans admitted to paying a bribe to access key public institutions and services, while 30 per cent reported having done so voluntarily.

More strikingly, 60 per cent of the Moroccans surveyed said they are unaware of the efforts made by the government and NGOs to fight the problem.

Moreover, the number of Moroccans reporting about corruption is "well below expectations".  According to the study whose results have been reported by daily newspaper Al Massae in its Thursday April 30 issue, only 78 complaints were filed at the national level, including 7 on the Fez-Bouleman region.

The study has also found that health sector tops the ranking of sectors most plagued by corruption in Morocco.
