Rabat - Marine Le Pen claims her views on Muslim immigration to France remain unchanged, despite Egypt’s top religious authority’s attempts to change them.
She met with Ahmed al-Tayeb, Egypt’s Grand Imam of al-Azhar, on Thursday to discuss her party’s stance on Islam and Muslims and the extremist views some Muslims in Europe are experiencing.
Le Pen is the head of the National Front, a party which has an image of being anti-Semitic and anti-immigration, and she is considered a front runner for France’s presidential election in 2017. Al-Tayeb questioned her party’s “hostile opinions towards Islam” in an attempt to correct these views.
Despite her attempts to change the National Front’s public image, Le Pen says her views on immigration have not changed at all in lieu of her visit. She agrees with Egyptian President Sisi’s fight against extremism. But she believes immigration is not the solution to this problem.
"We can't just welcome (immigrants) in France - the only solution is that we protect them in their country and for them to continue to live in their country," she said.
