Rabat - A group of women in Tangier launched a campaign on Facebook entitled "Women-only beach", calling for a private beach exclusively for women.
On their Facebook page, the activists said that the beach of Tangier is large enough to allocate a space exclusively for women to swim “in conformity with Islamic legislations” that prohibit women to show parts of their body in public.
Getting mobilized and attracting supporters, the campaigners announced that they will officially demand from the authorities on August 30 a women-only section of the “vast” beach of Tangier.
Commenting on the campaign, a Facebook user said “like men, we (women) also need a private place to cool off during the scorching summer months, without mixing with men.”
Another Facebook user said that while “sexual harassment is alarmingly increasing even in the streets –let alone beaches- women need a women-only beach to swim carefree.”
“Mixing men and women is not accepted in the customs of the Tangier, which was and is still a conservative city that still separates men and women even in parties and wedding ceremonies,” reads another comment.
While this initiative is applauded by some Moroccans of both genders, others criticized it, decrying the move as a way to attack Moroccan achievements in mutual respect between the genders.
Some find this initiative unnecessary, since there are no restrictions on beach attire on all the beaches of the Kingdom, and women can swim as they wish, even with clothes on.
