Rabat - Saudi Arabia’s Grand Mufti Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Shaikh has slammed Iranian movie on the prophet “Muhammad: The Messenger of God”, saying its screening is not permitted from a religious point of view.

The most expensive film ever produced in Iran, “Muhammad: The Messenger of God,” by Iranian director Majid Majidi has angered Sunni Muslims since it depicts the Prophet on screen.

“This is an obscene work... It is a distortion of Islam”, Sheikh Abdul Aziz Al Shaikh told the London-based Al Hayat daily newspaper, adding that "It is a hostile act against Islam.”

“Prophet Muhammad, Peace Be upon Him, had well-known and specific physical traits and moral qualities, and the movie makers insist on something that is not realistic,” he said.

“The Prophet is well above the movie. This film is a sacrilege…” Sheikh Abdul Aziz pointed out that this movie is a “mockery of the Prophet and a degradation of his status."

He added that anyone who wants to highlight the life of Prophet Muhammad should spread his sayings and teachings, and not through a movie made by “spoilers”.

“People are warned against watching the movie because those behind it are not trustworthy and rely on lies. They are not honest,” he said.

Iran's government was critical of the satirical cartoons of Prophet Muhammad depicted in French magazine Charlie Hebdo, which saw 11 of its staff murdered in its offices because of their polemic publication, in January 2015.

Nevertheless, Iran’s Shiite community is reportedly not as anxious about the depiction of religious figures as are the Sunni community.
