Taroudant - Cairo University, one of Egypts leading public universities issued a statement on Tuesday banning women wearing the niqab from teaching or lecturing at the university and its institutions.

“It is not permitted for female faculty ... in all colleges and institutes, to give lectures, tutorials, attend labs or deliver scientific training while wearing the niqab," stipulated the administration at Cairo University, on Tuesday.

In a statement, Gaber Nassar, the President of the University, said that the decision currently in force was made for the benefit of education and public interest in the hope of achieving a better communication between students and their instructors.

According to Ahmed Abuol Magd, director of the human rights foundation "Our Right," the decision has a political dimension. The university's "compass is adjusted based on who is in power in the country.”

The human right activist believes that universities, being a place for science and knowledge, should have their own ethics and standards, away from the influences of those in power.

On the other hand, Mona Abdel Radi, the co-founder of the National Front for Egypt's Women, hailed the decision and called for similar incentives to be adopted in schools and public institutions.

Abdel Radi believes that whilewearing the niqab is a matter of personal freedomwhere women have the right to wear it if they like, anyonedeal[ing] directly with the public [should not] be wearing [it].

In 2008, issues surrounding the niqab came to light when Egypts Al-Azhar University, the leading Sunni Islamic school in Egypt, banned the niqab in all-female classrooms and dormitories.
