Jews and Christians in Canada Welcome Muslims Whose Mosque Was Burned

New York - The Jewish and Christian communities in Peterborough, Ontario Canada, are welcoming Muslims in their places of worship after their mosque was burned down in an act of Islamophobia.

Following the Paris attacks of November 13, assaults against Muslims have risen across the world.

Hours after the Paris carnage, the Masjid Al Salaam Mosque in the Canadian city was the target of an attack with Molotov cocktails and was burned down to the ground leaving the Muslim community without a place to pray.

Larry Gillman, President of the Jewish community in Peterborough opened the doors of their synagogue to Muslims so they could perform their Friday prayers, according to the mosque’s website.

On November 27, more than 150 Muslims attended the Beth Israel Synagogue to pray, an event that was captured in its entirety through a video posted on YouTube by the Kawartha Muslim Religious Association.

This was the Second Friday (Jumuah) prayer congregation following the November 14 fire at the city’s mosque.

According to the same source, on December 4, the Christian All Saints’ Anglican Church in Peterborough hosted the Muslim community for their Friday prayers.

There are approximately 124,000 inhabitants in Peterborough, located 78 miles northeast of Toronto, where 800 are Muslims and 500 are Jews.

The structural damage caused by the fire at Masjid Al-Salaam has been estimated to exceed Canadian $80,000, according to the same source.
