Rabat - Dr. Salem Abdul Jalil, a professor of Islamic sciences at Egypt’s International University and former Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Endowments, said that it is “Haram,” or unlawful, in Islam for women to add men as Facebook friends.
The Egyptian cleric, who believes that the cons of the social networking "Facebook" site outweigh its pros, said that men and women “chatting” on Facebook is the main reason behind social problems that lead to divorce.
The cleric asserted that chatting among males and females on Facebook is “a form of adultery.” He added that women are not allowed to put their personal photos on any social media site on the internet.

“The relationship between men and women within the limits of work and family is OK, but anything beyond that is treading a path in the footsteps of the devil,” the cleric said.
Abdul Jalil stated that women are not allowed to comment on statements or Facebook posts, and that they should only read the comments and posts without interacting with others on social media.
The Egyptian university professor also stressed that an addiction to social media is worse than an addiction to drugs and alcohol.
In contrast, Dr. Sabri Ibada, the current Deputy Minister or Egypt’s Ministry of Endowments, categorically refuted Abdul Jalil’s claims, explaining that the statements are merely personal opinions and not a fatwa.

While some Muslim clerics have called for limiting interactions among Muslims on Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and CEO, issued a strong statement in support of the Muslim community around the world, saying that Muslims will always be welcome on Facebook, and that Muslim users could expect Facebook to "fight to protect your rights and create a peaceful and safe environment for you."
