Taroudante - An anti-Muslim group in Florida called for the resignation of Broward County Police Sheriff for hiring a Muslim deputy.
The anti-Islamic group strongly criticized Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, over his decision to hire deputy Nezar Hamze, who is also the Director of the Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), according to WPLG news.
The hate speech and anti-Muslim feelings on the case date back to October when anti-Islamic activists and Florida Tea Party members held a rally against the recruitment of a Muslim man in the police force, calling for both men to step down.
“What the hell is going on with Scott Israel that he hires a terrorist!” Tom Trento, member of anti-Islamic group The United West told the crowd at the rally.
Anti-Muslim activist David Rosenthal criticized the hiring of Deputy Hamze, based on his religious choice.
Rosenthal said he does not have intentions to harm Muslims, but he just does not "want them around."
He expressed his hatred toward Muslims and their entire faith. “I hate Islam. Islam is evil,” Rosenthal said.
“Ideally, I would ban Islam in the United States. I am against Sharia-compliant Muslims having any position in government, law enforcement or the schools,” he added.
Wilfredo Ruiz, an attorney who works with Nezar Hamze at CAIR Florida, stood in solidarity with his Muslim colleague, saying that this “is just another example of the rise of anti-Muslim rhetoric and needs to be exposed as hate speech.”
Ruiz argued that this type of hate speech is in line with the rhetoric of Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, who called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States."
The attorney added that Hamze is “a dedicated deputy, who is being treated unfairly”.
"Like him, thousands of other Muslims in America today are wearing the uniform. I was, myself, a naval officer. Nobody from a desk can tell me what patriotism is when I have worn my uniform."
Following the Paris attacks of November 13, Islamophobic acts have risen to an alarming level in Europe and America.
