New York - American news outlet Vox posted a video proving that Islamophobia in America goes beyond a cult of likeability for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
The rise of Islamophobia in America is reaching dangerous levels. The entire Muslim community is suffering the consequences of bigots who equate Islam with terrorism.
A Vox correspondent from Detroit, Michigan who attended a Donald Trump rally in Des Moines, Iowa wanted to know why despite Trump’s anti-Muslim rhetoric, his poll numbers keep rising.
Vox interviewed several of the GOP candidates’ supporters at the rally who believe Muslims are the problem and something should be done about it.
"I’m not one who is a bigot or anything, but I will tell you that I think we need to look much harder at the people who are causing the problems," a male supporter said, adding that “Radical Muslims. Radical Islam,” is the root of the problem. Yet, others did not seem to really like ‘The Donald’ and believe his words are “a marketing ploy.”
The conversations turned quickly into a general dislike for the entire Muslim community.
"The Muslims pose a threat. Not all Muslims. But you can’t tell the good ones from the bad ones. His thing is put a pause in until we can figure out a way to vet the people who are coming in…," another man said in support of Trump’s Muslim ban.
However, most supporters follow the Republican billionaire out of “pre-existing fear” for their security and not out of a “cult for Trump.”
“We want our country back. And I don’t appreciate that I have to be not safe in my own country because there are some tenets of their religion that basically teach them to kill people who don’t believe that they believe," another supporter said.
"If you break it down, yeah, they’re a problem. Sorry to say it, but can’t help it. Can’t help but feel that way. Right now, I don’t feel safe. And I think a lot of the country feels the same way,” another one said.
In line with Trump’s supporters, far-right conservative media has been inciting the same anti-Muslim rhetoric. "We need to kill them. We need to KILL them... And there’s only one group who can stop this war — the Muslims themselves," Judge Jeanine Pirro said on FOX news.
According to Vox’s findings, Islamophobia has resulted in more hate crimes since 9/11 and an alarming number after the Paris attacks of November 13.
