New York - “Lalla Salma Foundation for the Prevention and Treatment of Cancers” was founded in 2005, inspired by the leadership of Princess Lalla Salma, consort of King Mohammed VI of Morocco.
The non-profit organization works together with the national health-system to improve patients’ care, promote the prevention of and raise awareness in the fight against cancer throughout Morocco.
Every year, 32,000 Moroccans are diagnosed with cancer. The “Lalla Salma Foundation” works to reduce those numbers and better the lives of those suffering from the debilitating disease.
The “Lalla Salma Foundation” celebrated its 10th anniversary last October. Princess Lalla Salma participated in a documentary in which she talked about the goals, efforts, challenges and successes of her organization.
The 37-year-old Fez-native, wife of King Mohammed VI spoke in Moroccan-Arabic dialect, Darija.
“From the start, we had a clear vision, a precise objective and a long-term strategy. We announced the national program in the fight against cancer,” the princess said.
“We had a principal, primordial and unique goal – placing the patient at the heart of our actions.”
“Healing patients is our first goal. It is without a doubt, the most beautiful gift,” she stressed.
“When we visit patients who are sick, when we witness children heal and return to school, when a mother recovers her children, or when a father returns to his daily life and takes control, you cannot imagine the emotions that overtake us and the energy those visits give us,” she said amidst smiles.
Princess Lalla Salma recognized that the work done by her foundation in the last ten years could have not been done without partnerships and a team of experts.
“The results that we’ve accomplished are the product of partnerships and a global mobilization of all the parties involved: civilians, ministers, local authorities, media, private enterprises, doctors and administrative staff,” she highlighted.
“Their efforts have been focused on the same objective. This is a special Moroccan trait that we are proud of.”
“This is what has allowed us to obtain these results in such a short period of time,” the princess added.
However, the organization has also encountered challenges throughout the last ten years, which Lalla Salma touched on.
“Nothing is easy. The foundation has faced obstacles, difficulties and challenges. There have been tears, sleepless nights and problems. But thank God we’ve had the motivation to keep going forward,” she confessed.
“Morocco has made considerable progress. We have accomplished, thank God, our ambitions and our objectives. With the help and solidarity of everyone, everything is possible,” she concluded.
