Agadir - Moroccan activists took to social media to denounce government silence regarding the death of Amazigh activist Omar El Khaleq on Wednesday after he was beaten brutally by Pro-Polisario students on January 23.
The activists used Facebook and other social media platforms to cast harsh criticism on Morocco’s head of government, Abdell Ilah Benkirane, for “his double standard” in dealing with the similarly tragic university student deaths.
They called him “racist” in reference to Benkirane’s act of solidarity with the family of Abderrahim Elhasnaoui, who was the victim of “university students’ clashes” in Fez in 2014.
The activists expressed anger over Benkirane’s decision to “[travel] to Errachidia in a private jet” to attend the funeral of Elhasnaoui, who belonged to the students wing of Benkirane’s political party, the Party of Justice and Development.
They criticized the fact that Benkirane attacked the killers of Elhassnaoui and attended his funeral, while he has failed to speak of the “assassination” of the Amazigh activist El Khaleq or extend condolences to his family.
Abdellah Elhaloui, a university professor at Cadi Ayyad, denounced the government’s total silence regarding the “political assassination” of the Amazigh activist, questioning why Benkirane and Lahcen Douadi, the Minister of Higher Education, kept silent regarding El Khaleq’s killing after attending the funeral of Elhassnaoui.
Thousands of Amazigh and human rights activists attended the funeral of Khaliq in his hometown, Boumalen Dades, while no government officials were in attendance.
