One June 28th 2012, the United Nations General Assembly decided by consensus the “International Day of Happiness to be celebrated every year on March 20th.

The goals of The International Day of Happiness are to promote happiness as a universal goal that each and every one of us should achieve every day of our lives. Ambassador Al-Bayati of Iraq said in this respect: “The UN was formed and intended to be a peace keeping guardian, the objectives adopted in the UN such as peace, respect for human rights, eradication of poverty, sustainable development and millennium development goals, are all for one objective, which is the happiness for all of the people of humanity."

The United Nations Secretary General commented on this matter saying: “We need a new economic paradigm that recognizes the parity between the three pillars of sustainable development. Social, economic, and environmental well-being are indivisible. Together they define gross global happiness.” “People around the world aspire to lead happy and fulfilling lives free from fear and want, and in harmony with nature,” added Mr. Ban on his message for this special occasion.

In this first International Day for Happiness, let us all feel happy that our hearts are beating and that we are healthy; that our lives’ blessings, no matter how small they might seem to us at times, are always envied by others, who too believe their blessings are smaller than ours. Let us enjoy smiling at the people we know, and even those we don’t know.

Let us feel happy that there is at least one special person out there whom we feel happy to be around and want to share our happiness with. After all, isn’t happiness the only thing that’s doubled when shared?
