Taroudante - The French Council of the Muslim Faith (CFCM) called on French mosques to open their doors to the public for a “tea of brotherhood” on the weekend marking the one-year anniversary of the Charlie Hebdo attacks in Paris.

According to AFP, Anouar Kbibech, President of the French Council of the Muslim Faith, said on Saturday that non-Muslims are invited to visit mosques on January 9 and 10.

"People will be able to ask any questions they wish, even the most taboo, our religion, how to pray, over tea and pastries," in order to "break the distrust," Kbibech said.

“The aim is to commemorate the spirit of January 11, when millions marched in tribute to the victims of the attacks on Charlie Hebdo magazine and a Jewish supermarket in Paris,” he added.

While Muslims are taking initiatives to promote peace and tolerance, observers have reported a rise in Islamophobic acts in France following the Charlie Hebdo and the November 13 Paris attacks.

On Friday, a mob ransacked a Muslim prayer room in Ajaccio, the capital of the French island of Corsica, and attempted to burn copies of the Koran.

A day earlier, a dozen Muslims formed a symbolic human shield outside a church in France to protect Christians from any potential attacks during midnight Christmas Mass.

Last November, following the Paris attacks, members of the Moroccan community around the world offered “couscous de la fraternité” (Couscous of Brotherhood) to their neighbors of all faiths to “promote unity and confront barbarism.”
